A Praça de Fátima foi criada em 1954, segundo dados da prefeitura de Imperatriz por Frei Epifânio D’Abadia, quando este solicitou ao então prefeito Simplício Moreira a doação de um terreno que daria início a construção da Igreja Nossa Senhora de Fátima, sendo assim também destinado o espaço para a construção da praça, delimitada pela rua Simplício Moreira e pelas avenidas Dorgival Pinheiro de Sousa e Getúlio Vargas.
Inicialmente, a praça era apenas um espaço vazio com árvores e comércio próximo, o que aumentava o fluxo de pessoas na região. As ações de melhoria do espaço para se tornar um ambiente propício às ações públicas da cidade tiveram início no governo do prefeito Raimundo Souza e Silva, em 1970.
Segundo o livro “160 anos de Imperatriz”, cinco prefeitos pretenderam deixar sua marca na praça. O primeiro, como já dito foi o ex-prefeito Raimundo Silva. Renato Moreira, que o sucedeu, desmanchou o inicio da obra existente e levantou outro projeto. Três anos depois, o também ex-prefeito Francisco Xavier desmanchou o que restava da antiga praça e recomeçou tudo de novo. Não querendo ficar atrás, o interventor Bayma Júnior construiu um piso e canteiro na região. José de Ribamar Fiquene retirou os canteiros elevados e deu a Praça de Fátima uma nova feição. Finalmente Jomar Fernandes conferiu a Praça de Fátima o formato que permanece até os dias de hoje.
A Praça é um local acolhedor que fornece oportunidades de trabalho e de descanso. Nela podemos encontrar a Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Fátima, vários quiosques de vendas de lanches, e uma variedade de bancas de frutas e verduras que funcionam as quartas e sábados. Além de possuir um ponto de transporte individual de passageiros: Mototáxi e outro ponto de automóveis usado para transportar passageiros: Táxi.

O trabalho começa cedo para a feirante Mirian, que inicia a montagem da sua banca às 6h da manhã. Repõe as verduras e frutas e espera os clientes chegarem. Com a possibilidade de vendas somente as quartas e sábados as vendas não são muitas, mas há um diferencial nos produtos de dona Mirian, todos são vindos da agricultura de sua família, com isso não são utilizados agrotóxicos. Na praça o seu dia é bastante movimentado, entre as vendas, Mirian conversa com os vendedores vizinhos. A feirante conta que o trabalho é fruto de muito suor, e que mesmo vindo trabalhar por falta de emprego, encontrou no ambiente um lugar receptivo e acolhedor.
Nos quiosques a rotina é um pouco mais agitada, no total são seis distribuídos no local que funcionam durante o dia e a noite, são vendidos diversos tipos de alimentos, como: fast foods, e comidas típicas da região: Sarapatel, panelada, tacacá e vatapá. Os quiosques estão sempre cheios, pois a praça é localizada no centro da cidade, e com isso a movimentação tende a ser intensa. Raimundo Sousa da Silva, funcionário de um dos quiosques, trabalha há mais ou menos 1 ano e fala da experiência de extrair o seu sustento da banca.”Gosto muito do meu trabalho, encontro na praça um bom lugar para trabalhar, além de ser um ótimo lugar para trazer a família”, conta.
Dentre os diversos mototaxistas que trabalham na região, Edvaldo Sousa e Geovane Araújo são um dos que exercem sua função na Praça de Fátima. Atuando no ponto junto com seus colegas de profissão, enquanto espera a chegada de mais um passageiro, Edvaldo não desperdiça a oportunidade de elogiar o lugar. “A praça é como uma mãe. Venho todos os dias trabalhar, e me sinto muito bem”, relata.
Mas nem tudo são flores, Geovane Silva de Araujo, 36 anos, trabalha no ponto há três anos e aponta que o ambiente necessita de mais organização, segurança e limpeza. “Aqui é um dos cartões postais da cidade, é o coração de Imperatriz e portanto tem que ter mais segurança, organização e limpeza. Só aqui tem duas lixeiras, mas nenhuma dessas duas funcionam, se põe o lixo de um lado cai do outro”, declarou o mototaxista.

Há também uma banca de jornal na praça, o proprietário se chama Francisco Melo, de 53 anos de idade, que possui o ponto há 36 anos. “Vim trabalhar aqui por necessidade, não encontrava emprego”. Ele afirma que a banca possui muitos clientes e que os jornais e revistas são muito procurados.
A praça não recebe somente pessoas que precisam trabalhar, muitos moradores frequentam o lugar para rever os amigos, como o professor Gilberto Vargues, de 57 anos, que nas horas vagas visita o ambiente para encontrar e conversar com os amigos. “Sou frequentador, quase todos os dias estou aqui para conversar”, afirma.
Gilberto relata as mudanças aos quais a praça vem sofrendo “Nós tivemos várias mudanças, antes tínhamos uma praça bem simples que atendia questões sociais no horário da tarde. Nos últimos 15 anos isso vem mudando e agora atende tanto a parte social como comercial da cidade”. O professor também falou sobre o comercio nos arredores que acabou contribuindo para gerar uma fonte de produção de renda, “Hoje a nossa praça de Fátima é uma referência, além de ter uma igreja histórica. É um ponto estratégico para cartão postal, é até algo para se orgulhar”, destacou.
