A praça Brasil foi construída na década de 60 a partir do crescimento e organização de um dos maiores espaços do comércio popular na cidade de Imperatriz, a feira do Mercadinho. A praça possui posição estratégica, é rodeada por lojas, farmácias, agências bancárias, hotéis, restaurantes, hospitais, escolas, pontos de táxi, parada de ônibus e fica ao lado de uma das principais igrejas da cidade, a paróquia São Francisco de Assis. A história da praça Brasil não para por aí, o lugar é representado pelos trabalhadores e as pessoas que a frequentam, os relatos de vida contam com mais profundidade os benefícios e as experiências que o local traz.

Artesã, Rosiane Gomes, 42 anos de idade, mulher simpática, que diz gostar do que faz, começou na arte do artesão aos 12 anos de idade, aprendeu tudo sozinha. Ao longo da vida não se arrependeu de trabalhar com isso, pois há 30 anos exerce a profissão. Atua na Casa do Artesão há 10 anos, o local é de responsabilidade da prefeitura de Imperatriz. Ela é sócia da Associação dos Artesãos e por isso não paga aluguel. Prefere ser chamada de Rose, e afirma que a praça não precisa de uma grande reforma, mas de bancos para que as pessoas possam descansar, e visitar o local com mais frequência.

A Casa do Artesão é bem localizada dentro da praça, mas as vendas, no momento, estão fracas devido à falta de turistas e pessoas interessadas na compra de produtos artesanais, porém, Rosiane, não permite que o desânimo bata em sua porta. Há 20 anos trabalha no Centro de Artesanato de Imperatriz. Ela, foi uma das fundadoras, conseguiram o local com muita luta, pois antes da fundação os artesãos trabalhavam nas ruas da cidade. Começou a trabalhar muito jovem como atendente, afirma orgulhosa que a associação possui 285 sócios e hoje é feliz trabalhando como artesã na praça Brasil.

Taxista, Damião Lima, 56 anos de idade, trabalha na praça há 15 anos, começou na profissão por meio de um amigo que comprou seu alvará. Damião, diz que quando iniciou a carreira foi difícil para se adaptar, mas, a partir do momento que fez sua clientela, as coisas melhoraram. Hoje, devido à crise que atinge o país encontra dificuldades para se manter no trabalho, porém Damião é otimista e afirma, “os clientes diminuíram, mas, não acabaram”. O motorista destaca que a praça é boa para trabalhar devido o intenso fluxo comercial.

Mas, algumas dificuldades são apontadas pelo taxista, ele alega que a falta de iluminação pública dificulta o trabalho à noite, já que o ponto dos taxistas fica aberto 24 horas. “A praça precisa de uma reforma na parte de iluminação pública, é péssima, a pior. A única segurança que temos é a de Jesus. As viaturas (da polícia), passam, mas não é um serviço fixo”. Mesmo com os obstáculos o motorista afirma não se arrepender do que faz, pois, com a profissão conseguiu conquistar seu sustento de vida, “a gente faz aquilo que gosta se não gostasse não teria trabalhado por 15 anos como taxista”.

Aqui pegamos o ônibus e podemos ir para o shopping, apesar de ser próximo, mas se não quer ir a pé, vem para cá, pega o ônibus e vai”, explica Celma.

Fica de frente para o sol, é toda de metal e esquenta muito”. Celma, espera com paciência durante uma hora ou mais todos os dias pelo ônibus, e sonha que um dia a estrutura da praça seja melhorada.

Raimundo Coimbra, 69 anos de idade, aposentado e piauiense, trabalha na praça Brasil há 10 anos como vendedor ambulante de salgados e sucos. Foi metalúrgico na cidade de São Paulo e pega ônibus todos os dias para poder trabalhar, pois mora no povoado Cidade Nova às margens da rodovia Belém-Brasília. Para ele a aposentadoria não é suficiente, e a venda de salgados é uma alternativa para fugir do ócio e complementar a renda. Raimundo é semianalfabeto, confirma que sabe apenas assinar o nome, mas, isso não o impede de ter opinião crítica sobre assuntos voltados para a política ou economia. Mesmo gostando de trabalhar na praça, o ambulante relata que o lugar precisa de mais cuidados, e não de uma reforma, pois se isso acontecer ele teme que os camelôs sejam retirados do local e não tenham onde trabalhar. Hoje, se diz feliz com a profissão que exerce, adquiriu experiência e conquistou muitos amigos.
